By using this In this coding tutorial, you can implement User Role and Their permissions. We will use Laravel spatie package for such functionality in our laravel app.

We will also build laravel 8.4 inbuilt Auth functionality by using Laravel 8 bootstrap auth scaffolding.

We are using PHP 8 | XAMPP Localhost Server | VS Code Editor

Watch Full Tutorial on youtube

Let’s Start to build it –

1st Step – Install Laravel 8.4

In step 1, open your visual studio code terminal and go to your localhost/xampp htdocs directory. ex –

cd xampp/htdocs

after that install laravel 8.4 or latest by using the following command: laravel new blogapp.

2nd Step – Configure Database

Open your laravel app folder in visual code editor and open .env file and add mysql database details like below :

DB_CONNECTION=mysql
DB_HOST=127.0.0.1
DB_PORT=3306
DB_DATABASE=db name
DB_USERNAME=db user name
DB_PASSWORD=db password

3rd Step – Install Laravel Spatie Role and Permission Packgae and HTML form Package

Just simple We need to run below two following commands one by one in VS code editor terminal to install these packages.

composer require spatie/laravel-permission
composer require laravelcollective/html

After Packages installed, open config/app.php file and Add the below Package Provider class path :

'providers' => [
Spatie\Permission\PermissionServiceProvider::class,
],

Then Publish Laravel Spatie package dependencies by using following command in terminal:

php artisan vendor:publish --provider="Spatie\Permission\PermissionServiceProvider"

4th Step – Make Blog Model and Migration

Run below command in terminal, it will create model and migration together

php artisan make:model Blog -m

After that you need to open database migration file name create_blog_tables.php. It’s located in database/migrations folder. Then add or replace below code.

<?php

use Illuminate\Support\Facades\Schema;
use Illuminate\Database\Schema\Blueprint;
use Illuminate\Database\Migrations\Migration;

class CreateBlogsTable extends Migration
{
    /**
     * Run the migrations.
     *
     * @return void
     */
    public function up()
    {
        Schema::create('Blogs', function (Blueprint $table) {
            $table->id();
            $table->string('title');
            $table->text('detail');
            $table->timestamps();
        });
    }

    /**
     * Reverse the migrations.
     *
     * @return void
     */
    public function down()
    {
        Schema::dropIfExists('blogs');
    }
}

then add below code into Blog.php model file. It’s located in App/Models folder.

<?php

namespace App\Models;

use Illuminate\Database\Eloquent\Factories\HasFactory;
use Illuminate\Database\Eloquent\Model;

class Blog extends Model
{
    use HasFactory;

    /**
     * The attributes that are mass assignable.
     *
     * @var array
     */
    protected $fillable = [
        'title', 'detail'
    ];
}

Then Open User.php model file and add below code. This file located at App/Models.

<?php

namespace App\Models;

use Illuminate\Contracts\Auth\MustVerifyEmail;
use Illuminate\Database\Eloquent\Factories\HasFactory;
use Illuminate\Foundation\Auth\User as Authenticatable;
use Illuminate\Notifications\Notifiable;
use Spatie\Permission\Traits\HasRoles;

class User extends Authenticatable
{
    use HasFactory, Notifiable, HasRoles;

    /**
     * The attributes that are mass assignable.
     *
     * @var array
     */
    protected $fillable = [
        'name',
        'email',
        'password',
    ];

    /**
     * The attributes that should be hidden for arrays.
     *
     * @var array
     */
    protected $hidden = [
        'password',
        'remember_token',
    ];

    /**
     * The attributes that should be cast to native types.
     *
     * @var array
     */
    protected $casts = [
        'email_verified_at' => 'datetime',
    ];
}

5th Step – Register the middleware in laravel

Open kernel.php in App/Http folder & add the following code.

protected $routeMiddleware = [

    'role' => \Spatie\Permission\Middlewares\RoleMiddleware::class,
    'permission' => \Spatie\Permission\Middlewares\PermissionMiddleware::class,
    'role_or_permission' => \Spatie\Permission\Middlewares\RoleOrPermissionMiddleware::class,
]

6th Step – Add or Create Routes

Open web.php file in routes folder and add below routes after home routes.

Route::group(['middleware' => ['auth']], function() {
    Route::resource('roles', RoleController::class);
    Route::resource('users', UserController::class);
    Route::resource('blogs', BlogController::class);
});

7th Step – Make Controllers

Run below 3 commands in terminal and make controller. We will make User, Role, and Blog Controller.

php artisan make controller UserController
php artisan make controller RoleController
php artisan make controller BlogController

After that open UserController.php file, It’s located at app/http/controllers, and below code.

below code is complete user resource, which perform all user CRUD operations.

<?php
namespace App\Http\Controllers;
use Illuminate\Http\Request;
use App\Http\Controllers\Controller;
use App\Models\User;
use Spatie\Permission\Models\Role;
use DB;
use Hash;
use Illuminate\Support\Arr;
class UserController extends Controller
{
/**
* Display a listing of the resource.
*
* @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
*/
public function index(Request $request)
{
$data = User::orderBy('id','DESC')->paginate(5);
return view('users.index',compact('data'))
->with('i', ($request->input('page', 1) - 1) * 5);
}
/**

*
* @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
*/
public function create()
{
$roles = Role::pluck('name','name')->all();
return view('users.create',compact('roles'));
}
/**

public function store(Request $request)
{
$this->validate($request, [
'name' => 'required',
'email' => 'required|email|unique:users,email',

]);
$input = $request->all();
$input['password'] = Hash::make($input['password']);
$user = User::create($input);
$user->assignRole($request->input('roles'));
return redirect()->route('users.index')
->with('success','User created successfully');
}
/**

*/
public function show($id)
{
$user = User::find($id);
return view('users.show',compact('user'));
}
/**
* Show the form for editing the specified resource.
*
* @param  int  $id

*/
public function edit($id)
{
$user = User::find($id);
$roles = Role::pluck('name','name')->all();
$userRole = $user->roles->pluck('name','name')->all();

'roles' => 'required'
]);
$input = $request->all();
if(!empty($input['password'])){
$input['password'] = Hash::make($input['password']);
}else{
$input = Arr::except($input,array('password'));
}
$user = User::find($id);
$user->update($input);
DB::table('model_has_roles')->where('model_id',$id)->delete();
$user->assignRole($request->input('roles'));
return redirect()->route('users.index')
->with('success','User updated successfully');
}
/**

* @return \Illuminate\Http\Response
*/
public function destroy($id)
{
User::find($id)->delete();
return redirect()->route('users.index')
->with('success','User deleted successfully');
}
}

After that open RoleController.php file, It’s located at app/http/controllers, and below code.

8th Step – Install Bootstrap Auth Scaffolding and Laravel UI

Run Below command in terminal, This will create laravel inbuilt authentication and view,js and css files for us.

composer require laravel/ui
php artisan ui bootstrap --auth

9th Step – Install Node NPM Package

Run below These Two commands in terminal one by one.

npm install
npm run hot

10th Step – Create all blade view files

Create below folders and their respective files.

  • Users Folder
    • index.blade.php create.blade.php edit.blade.php show.blade.php
  • Roles Folder
    • index.blade.php create.blade.php edit.blade.php show.blade.php
  • Blogs Folder
    • index.blade.php create.blade.php edit.blade.php show.blade.php

After that go to app.blade.php file in resources/views/layouts folder & add the below html code.

10th Step – Data Seeders

in this step we will create permission data and Admin user in database by using laravel seeders. Run below two commands one by one:

php artisan make:seeder PermissionTableSeeder
php artisan make:seeder CreateAdminUserSeeder

after that, add bellow code into PermissionTableSeeder file. its located at database/seeds/PermissionTableSeeder.php

<?php

namespace Database\Seeders;

use Illuminate\Database\Seeder;
use Spatie\Permission\Models\Permission;

class PermissionTableSeeder extends Seeder
{
    /**
     * Run the database seeds.
     *
     * @return void
     */
    public function run()
    {
        $permissions = [
           'role-list',
           'role-create',
           'role-edit',
           'role-delete',
           'blog-list',
           'blog-create',
           'blog-edit',
           'blog-delete'
        ];

        foreach ($permissions as $permission) {
             Permission::create(['name' => $permission]);
        }
    }
}

then add bellow code into CreateAdminUserSeeder file. its located at database/seeds/CreateAdminUserSeeder.php

<?php

namespace Database\Seeders;

use Illuminate\Database\Seeder;
use App\Models\User;
use Spatie\Permission\Models\Role;
use Spatie\Permission\Models\Permission;

class CreateAdminUserSeeder extends Seeder
{
    /**
     * Run the database seeds.
     *
     * @return void
     */
    public function run()
    {
        $user = User::create([
            'name' => 'Admin User',
            'email' => '[email protected]',
            'password' => bcrypt('12345678')
        ]);

        $role = Role::create(['name' => 'admin']);

        $permissions = Permission::pluck('id','id')->all();

        $role->syncPermissions($permissions);

        $user->assignRole([$role->id]);
    }
}

then run below commands one by one to seed the data in the permission and user table.

php artisan migrate
php artisan db:seed --class=PermissionTableSeeder
php artisan db:seed --class=CreateAdminUserSeeder
